Overseas Trips

NYP is not all work and no play! Over here, we play and have fun just as hard as we learn. There will be trips during your semester breaks where you get to visit countries such as Korea, Malaysia and even Japan! During these trips you may get a chance to visit places such as Zouk, take a look at how they operate before the club opens itself for the night. Doesn't that sound interesting?!

As for this year, we have the Japan Trip! It will bring us to places such as Tokyo, look at how they operate their business and understand the culture. There will be time allocated for shopping as well. Imagine all the funky things you will get to buy!

Lectures & Tutorials

Ever wondered what's it like to study in NYP? How are the classes conducted, what do they mean by lectures and tutorials? Fret no more, all your questions are answered here!

Tutorials
In NYP, we don't have classes where you stay in one class and different teachers come in to teach you the different subjects. In NYP, class rooms are actually called tutorial rooms where you move from one tutorial room to another tutorial room. These tutorials are typically 2 hours long. It's where you tutors (teachers) go through your assignments (homework) for the week. The more you participate in these tutorials the more *class participation marks you earn!

Now that you know about tutorials let's take a look at Lectures.

Lectures
A lecture is where your lecturers give a one or two hour lecture based on your module. Yes he/she will talk continuously for one or two hours! But it isn't that bad (; In one week, you will usually have one lecture and one tutorial per module (subject). There are around 5-6 modules in each semester.

*Class participation is when you participate in your tutorials by answering questions.

Competitions (Nescafe)

Unlike what you may be thinking, no, we're not referring to competitions that you have to participate in apart from your academics and CCAs. These competitions are actually a part of you academics, a part of what you're required to do.

Feeling confused? Well, in NYP's Diploma in Marketing, there are projects where you stand a chance to win prizes, be it monetary or in the form of gifts. This is how it goes; you are given a  project to do. But there is a catch; these projects are tied to competitions. If yur group does a good job, you get to enter the semi-finals. There you'll compete with other groups to get a place in the finals. Which if you get through you stand a chance to win prizes! (An example would be the Nescafe Competition for the year 3 students)

Doesn't that sound awesome?! YOU benefit by learning and understanding your modules (we call subjects "modules" in NYP) and may even win prizes!! Not only do YOU benefit academically but monetarily as well without spending any additional time!

So, what more could you ask for?  (;

Teaching Enterprise Project (TEP)

The Teaching Enterprise Project is exclusive to NYP. No other polytechnic in Singapore offers it. It is a practise-based teaching course that has 3 phases and lasts for 27 weeks. The 3 phases consist of Full-Time Attachment, Part-Time Attachment and Classical as can be seen from above.

Basically, you undergo practise-based learning through attachments in real business centres found in NYP's campus itself.

It gives you an advantage over other polytechnic students when you go for IPP. Why is this so? It is because in TEP, you learn what it is like to be in a working environment.

You are given roles and responsibilities to handle. It will groom you to be a more confident person and learn to speak out. It will all come in handy when you go for IPP. Thus, you'll be prepared for your attachment in the company you will be attached to.

Industrial Placement Programme

The above is an overview of your school schedule in NYP. This is what you will be going through before graduating.

As most of you already know, polytechnics offer the "attachment programme". In NYP, we call it the "Industrial Placement Programme". It is offered in Year 3 and there are 2 rounds. First round is during the break right before Year 3 Sem 1. Second round is during the break between Year 3 Sem 1 and Year 3 Sem 2. Your class will be chosen to go for IPP in any of those 2 rounds.

Our Industrial Placement Programme lasts for about 10 weeks and it gives you the exposure you require to get in to the working world. IPP will give you a chance to experience the practical work and learn the skills required for your course when working in an organization!

At NYP, we have strong industrial links which enables us to give you the best companies for your IPP. There have been instances whereby the IPP organization actually asked the students to return back to work after graduating and so may you!
